Case Study - Maclocks iPad Security Deployment in UK Retail

This case study documents a Maclocks iPad security deployment carried out for a mid-market UK fashion retailer operating 24 stores across England and Scotland. The project was completed in Q3 2025 and involved the specification, supply and installation of tablet security hardware for three distinct use cases across every store: till-point POS, customer-facing self-service units and digital display stands. The retailer identity is kept confidential at their request.

Background and Challenge

The retailer had been operating iPad-based POS since 2022. By early 2025, the IT team had recorded 23 iPad thefts across the estate over an 18-month period - an annual replacement cost of approximately 19,000 GBP, before accounting for the IT time required to replace and reconfigure each device.

In addition to till-point theft, the retailer had launched a customer self-service initiative: iPads at fitting room entrances running a virtual styling application. Three of these devices had been stolen within six weeks of launch, prompting an urgent review of the physical security specification. The IT director engaged ElockStore UK to audit the existing hardware configuration and propose a standardised security solution.

Audit Findings

• Till-point POS tablets were mounted on consumer-grade swivel stands with no locking mechanism. The iPad could be lifted from the stand in under three seconds.
• Self-service fitting room tablets were attached using adhesive desk mounts that provide no meaningful security as adhesive bonds degrade with temperature changes and cleaning products.
• Digital display tablets near shop entrances were on open display stands with no physical restraint at all.

Solution Specified by ElockStore UK

Till-Point POS (96 units across 24 stores): Maclocks iPad Air aluminium enclosure with 360 degree swivel countertop stand, through-bolt counter mount and key barrel lock. Four units per store.

Customer Self-Service Units (24 units): Maclocks floor-standing kiosk pole with full aluminium enclosure, portrait orientation, heavy cast-iron weighted base (7kg) and cable management. No surface fixings required, allowing deployment flexibility.

Digital Display Tablets (24 units): Maclocks wall-mount bracket with flush-profile enclosure, landscape orientation, through-bolted to structural wall at 160cm height.

Results at Six Months Post-Deployment

• iPad theft incidents: 1 in six months post-deployment, compared to 15 in the equivalent prior period (93% reduction)
• IT support tickets for device replacement: Reduced from an average of 4.2 per month to 0.3 per month
• Annual hardware replacement cost saving: Estimated 17,500 GBP per year
